ASEAN tells Myanmar to be Ready to Receive ASEAN Special Envoy

PHNOM PENH: The ASEAN Chairmanship 2022 issued a statement today reaffirming ASEAN Member States' support for Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar and urging Myanmar to be ready to receive ASEAN Chair special envoy visit as soon as possible so that the five points of the ASEAN consensus can be implemented.

The ASEAN chair stated that for the past year, ASEAN members have been concerned about the situation of violence and humanitarian aid to the country. Reaffirming its commitment to assist Myanmar in adhering to the Five Consensus and the ASEAN Charter, with the understanding that lasting peace and national reconciliation can only be achieved through a common political solution.

Chairman of ASEAN Noted that: "ASEAN Member States welcome the appointment of His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar; and call on Myanmar authorities to facilitate missions of the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair, beginning with the first visit to Myanmar as soon as possible to meet with all parties concerned, in order to move forward the implementation of the 5PC."

ASEAN's five points consensus for Myanmar are to call for an end to the violence, establish a multilateral dialogue, accept the coordination of ASEAN special envoys, provide humanitarian assistance and allow special envoys to visit Myanmar.

During Prime Minister Hun Sen's visit to Myanmar on January 7 and 8, Mr. Min Aung Hlaing promised the Prime Minister that the Myanmar military government will extend the ceasefire until the end of 2022, facilitate the process of receiving aid from ASEAN and facilitate ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar to meet with all parties to the conflict in the country, including ethnic armed groups

In addition to this promise, on January 26, 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen once again reminded Min Aung Hlaing to be patient and respect his promise to implement the five points of the ASEAN Consensus.
